The title for this post is strange for a few reasons, the post isn’t about alcohol, and I don’t even drink. That is beside the point.
The purpose of this post is to reflect on a way of treating people that is being lost in a world of text messages, emails, tweet, facebook posts, etc… If you want to tell someone something, you rarely have to tell it to their face. You have so many other mediums for communication, many of which make being honest a little bit easier. It isn’t hard to tell someone that you don’t like them when you all you see are the words you type onto a screen. The problem is, the person those words are targeted at still sting, and the offender is completely unaware of the consequences of their actions. That’s why it is so much easier to communicate by these means, you can do so in blissful ignorance (until someone retaliates).
I think that in the information age, we’re hiding behind our computers and smart phones and quickly forgetting the value of an all out verbal brawl.
I’ve always been a proponent of brutal, in-person honesty. It keeps lines of communication clear and ensures that both parties involved are simultaneously receiving and sending messages. They are communicating their thoughts and giving feedback on the other person’s. I think this ultimately makes both parties stronger, and teaches them both the significance of their words.
So why don’t we all try a little face-to-face communication, straight up, no chaser.
